Mad as hell.
Its been a minute since I did one of these posts & since I'm fuming I figure its about time.

Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida

It was a big weekend for Dana White's Ultimate Fighting Championship. Two headline fights took place for UFC 98. Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida was the main event. Going into this fight Rashad had a huge following. There was a lot of people who had questionable outcomes for what might happen in this fight, Machida hungry for a win and Rashad putting his title on the line.

First of all, this was an exciting matchup.Both men being undefeated made this match that much more exciting. I wont front, I am a big fan of Rashad Evans and have been since his earlier days on the second season of Spike's tv series The Ultimate Fighter. I appreciate his stand up game and think he is a solid contender for his place in the UFC.

I'm also a big fan of Lyoto Machdia. I first witnessed Machida when he fought Tito Ortiz back at UFC 84 and it was then Lyoto had earned a great deal of respect from me.

I was rooting for Rashad during this fight and honestly thought that he was going to be able to pull off a big win. Rashad came into the fight with his regular stance, fast moving hands and stern looking face. He threw a couple punches trying to find his reach while Machida stood strong with his rare Karate stance. The fight soon went into the second round where Machida tagged Rashad with what looked to be a straight left puch. They both went to the ground and Rashad soon got back up to his feet. Unfortunatley Rashad was still stunned and was put up against the cage with Machdia throwing hands from all different angles. Rashad went down hard, like a ton of bricks if you will.

Now I'm ok with the outcome. You cant win them all and I understand that. What I have a problem with is the typical band wagoners who are jumping all over Machida and immediately started acting like Rashad never had a chance and has yet to prove himself in the octagon. Give me a break. Before this fight Rashad had a well deserved fan base and now it seems they have all disappeared.

If there is one thing I cant stand its people who jump on bandwagons. Rashad has given many loyal UFC fans great fights and its hard to believe people have already forgotten. But thats how these people work I guess. Ruthless I say, ruthless.

Writer Wednesdays RE UP Travis from WYDU Exclusive Interview May 2008

I know its been a while since I brought the interview idea about, but I have just been busy with a few things. I promise to get in contact with everyone who said they were interested in taking an interview. I apreciate the support, this was my first interview I ever did and it was a blast. The Interview

->I would just like to start off by saying your blog is my all time favourite as far as reviews, interviews and music goes. After my first visit to WYDU I was inspired to start a blog of my own. So my first question is what inspired you to build a blog your own and what is the story behind the name WYDU?

Travis: Thanks, I appreciate it. It always makes me feel good to know that I inspired other people. One of the reasons I started this blog was to help other people. I’m not saying I’m Mister Know-it-All when it comes to hip hop, because there are many others out there that know more than I do, but I felt with my many years listening to the music, I was in the position to help keep the culture alive.

The first blog I ever discovered was Noz’s “Cocaine Blunts”, before that, I had no clue what a “blog” was. That was in February or March of ’05. I was basically flabbergasted at the old tracks he had on there. There were old Jay-Z tracks from ’85, Keith Murray tracks when he was known as Keefy Keef, just off the wall shit. Soon I started discovering other sites like Low End Theory, Ear Fuzz, Can I Get My Gat, Broke B-Boys, Vinyl Addicts and others. I was learning things I never personally knew about and at that time I thought I knew all there was to know about hip hop. Boy, was I wrong. Well as that summer went on, I started hanging out on the Cocaine Blunts boards, where I was able to get a lot of the albums that I had lost over the years, either through house parties, ex-tweaker friends or car break ins. It was all the out of print stuff that I honestly thought I’d never see again. It also put me in touch with other hip-hop heads that were as insanely crazy about the music as I was. So I was really feeling a renewed faith in the music and a strong desire to learn and read all that I could. Technically I started thinking about starting my own blog that summer (2005), but I didn’t think I could really hold my own and say anything interesting that people would want to read. Then when fall rolled around, a cat I had met threw the Masta Ace boards (yeah, internet boards are GANGSTA, POTNA!) by the name of Polarity talked me into starting a blog with him. I owe Polarity for finally making me start up WYDU. Polarity is cat from Australia, who is now a big rap star in the Aussie group Low Budget. Po knows just as much as I do, if not more and if you go back and read some of his posts, he is a better writer than I could ever dream of being. So whatever happens, I’ll always consider Polarity the co-founder of WYDU, if it wasn’t for him, I probably would have started a blog about polka music or some shit.

As far as the name goes, there is kind of interesting story behind that. Polarity and I both have kind of demented sense of humours. The first month when we were working on the template and thinking of some sort of path we wanted to take, we didn’t really have a name. Polarity suggested “Walk With A Kane”, which looking back it now, probably would have been just as good, if not better, than Wake Your Daughter Up. But I wasn’t feeling it, so during one of our brain storming sessions we were having over IM, he asked me to come up with some names. Of course, this is a late Saturday night for me, and I’m already a few “pops” into it by then. Thank god Polarity was smart enough to shoot down some of my suggestions. Some of them were:

As you can see Wake Your Daughter Up won out. It's not that we were trying to be sick demented pervs...okay, maybe we were, but we thought it was a nice play on words since No Face's album was the kind of stuff we wanted to highlight, the rarer music out there. For what it was worth, "Don't You Wish Your Boyfriend Was Swass Like Me" was actually the first pick, but DYWYBWSLM doesn’t quit roll off of your tongue and kind of shot that down. Not that "Wake Your Daughter Up" is much shorter.

->Haha, thats an intersting story. Brew Rhymes With Crew recently had its first birthday, how old is WYDU?

Travis: Happy Birthday with that, a year is saying something. You are either incredibly bored or you really like working on a blog. The fact that WYDU is going on three years this October probably speaks volumes about me and what my life has become….haha

->Three years is respectable. I understand you changed locations and moved to a new city this past year. Whereabouts do you reside now and what was your hometown you grew up in?

Travis: Yikes, I always hate this question. I think people tend to concentrate too much on where people are from instead of what they know. If that was the case, then only Americans would know anything about hip hop and anyone outside of the states would be frontin’ and we all know that isn’t the case at all. I always agree with Rakim on “It’s not where you’re from, it’s where you’re at”. With that said, I’m currently residing in the city I was born in, for better or for worse. I won’t come out and say it, I’ll just say it’s the third biggest city in the Pacific Northwest (no, not Spokane) with Seattle and Portland being one and two. It’s not that I’m embarrassed of where I’m from, it’s that I’d rather have people concentrate on what I know and what I can bring to the table. I’ve already had a couple issues with my current location since I’ve moved back. In Denver, where I formally resided, I had no problem hooking up interviews if a group was in town. The two interviews I’ve tried to schedule with artists touring here, both have blown me off. I don’t know if the locale had anything to do with it, but since one artist agreed to do an interview in Denver, but blew me off here, I kind of have a feeling it is.

I do hope to get back to Denver again by the end of the year, or possibly Seattle or San Diego. I’m kind of in a position that I need to be in an area with more connections to really accomplish what I want. My hometown probably isn’t going to allow that at this time.

->Was the hip hop scene big in your neighborhood growing up or was it something that was hard to come by?

Travis: I had a next door neighbor who was a year older than me and with me being an only child, he was the closest thing I had to an older brother. He started liking Run DMC when they had “Walk This Way” as their monster hit, and so did I. Little by little, a handful of neighborhood kids started listening to hip hop. This was in the late 80’s, like 87-90. We would listen to Public Enemy, EPMD, Kid N Play, Ice T, Skinny Boyz, Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rudd and a few others. Another kid and me were the ones that would always buy the tapes and everyone else would dub them from us. Sound familiar? Some things never change…haha. I started developing the nickname of Flavor Glave (my last name), then it went to Flavor, then finally Flav. I still have certain friends that call me that if they happen to run into me. As the 90’s started and grunge music became the next big thing, they all started listening to that, while I stuck to the hip hop.

I’m sure at times, I had one of the, if not the largest hip hop collection in the city. I can’t prove that, but there wasn’t many people bumping the kinds of things I was in those days. But in the overall sense of things, my hometown has always lacked any kind of hip hop scene. It’s trying to get something going, but I don’t think the organization is there just yet.

->Besides hip hop, are there any other genres of music you enjoy listening to? If so could you name a few groups or artists?

My mom was instrumental (no pun intended) in my appreciation for many different kinds of music. She played a lot of different kinds of music when I was a kid. Also the fact that I had my "white” non hip hop listening friends and my hip hop listening friends growing up has played a large influence in listening to different genres. That all equals out that I listen to just about anything other than country music (although I have some Garth Brooks somewhere on disc). These days, my second favorite kind music is “classic” rock, stuff like Tom Petty, Steve Miller, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Doors, that kind of thing. I’ll also listen to old heavy metal that my friends older brothers would listen to when I was growing up, such as any pre-black album Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, or Suicidal Tendencies. In the early 90’s, I didn’t listen to anything but hip hop, so I’m still listening to a lot of the music I slept on back then such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and that kind of thing.

The past couple years, thanks to blogs (Souled On gets the most props) and just a general interest in sample sources, I’ve got into a lot of the old Soul/Funk/R&B music. I’m big on stuff like Eddie Harris, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd, Gene Harris, Etta James and others. I’m enjoying a lot of that kind of music these days. Music is just an overall important part of my life, but hip hop will always reign supreme.

->For me hip hop is usually something I’ll listen to when driving to work, working out, drinking with my buddies or even writing an essay for school. When you are listening to hip hop what is it that you can often be found doing?

Travis : I go through my phases where I listen to nothing but hip hop. In the past, I’ve gone through two week periods or so that’d I’d listen to other types of music, but that hasn’t happened a lot lately. I think running the blog requires me to stay up on the new stuff and couple that with the fact that I still love my classic hip hop, I listen to hip hop pretty much all the time. I usually listen to the iPod to and from work. I’m fortunate enough to be able to listen to my iPod at work. Then when I’m working on the blog, I’ll usually have something playing. I love putting on hip hop when I’m playing my PS2 (too broke to afford the new shit) like Madden or MLB 08. Depending who I’m with, I’ll put on some hip hop before heading out or doing a “pre-game” warm up before hitting a show or going down town. So yeah, it’s a pretty major part of my listening habits.

->How old were you when you fell in love with hip hop?

Travis: Well, I first started listening to hip hop in 1986, but I’m not sure I’d say I was in “love” with it. I listened to LL Cool J, Run DMC, or Beastie Boys fairly non-stop from 86 on, it wasn’t until 1988 when I saw the first episode of “Yo! MTV Raps” that I went into the frenzy state that hasn’t really subsided since then. That was really the jump off point. I bought every artist’s album that appeared on that first episode. In 1988, I would have been fourteen or fifteen. So over half of my life, I’ve been into the music.

->My first cassette tape was a copy of Vanilla Ice’s “To The Extreme”, if you can remember what was yours?

Travis: I think I’ve killed to many brain cells to really remember. I dubbed “Kings of Rock” and “Raising Hell” from my next door neighbor, so I wouldn’t count those. The first purchase was either LA Dream Team’s “Kings of the West Coast” or the vinyl of Beastie Boys “Licensed To Ill”. I still have both of those original copies which is incredible in it’s own right.

->I really like what you did with the smile rays. How did you hook up with them and what do you think the future holds for “The Smile Rays”.

Travis: I’m glad you were feeling it. There were a couple negative comments about that, but a lot more positive than negative. Overall though, that was a fun week all around, something I really enjoyed. I believe in pushing music that I love and theirs is something that I’m really feeling these days. In all honesty though, the original plan I had was eMC week, the week that “The Show” dropped. My connection though is Punchline and it never panned out.

I can’t remember exactly how I discovered their music, it was either looking through my friends on Myspace, or I was looking at The AB’s myspace (aka Asamov) which Therapy is a part of. He is also the MC for the Smile Rays. It had something to do with me killing time surfing on Myspace. I started listening to their music that day and I was like “Damn, this is some great shit”, so I just kind of followed their career from afar. When they were named part of the Rawkus 50, I was pretty stoked, because I figured that’d give me a chance to hear more from them. They dropped “Smilin’ On You” as their Rawkus album, which would be my first ever digital purchase, something I hate to do, but that’s for another time. I would end up reviewing the album on WYDU last winter and if I remember right, Daisey, who does the vocals for the Smile Rays, stumbled across it and dropped me a line thanking me. Then Therapy, who is just a crazy funny dude, dropped me a line on myspace thanking me. I asked him if they’d be down to do an interview. After we played phone tag and rescheduled a few times, Therapy and I finally sat down and did a phoner this spring. Daisey and Bat had to pull out at the last minute, so I figured I’d hit them up later. I got busy and wasn’t able to transcribe Therapy’s interview, which was crazy long as it was. By this time, they were getting ready to drop the physical release of “Smilin’ On You”, so I figured since I wasn’t able to pull off the eMC week, they were probably my favorite group at the moment, why not have them for the week. The rest, as they say, is history. All three are great people, so it’s even easier to get behind the project when you really want to see good things happen for the artists.

->In the past you’ve expressed your love for the MLB, NFL and NBA, have you ever given the NHL chance?

Travis: For whatever reason, I’ve just never gotten gung-ho about the NHL. I can’t just set on the couch and watch a NHL game for whatever reason. I love watching hockey live though. My hometown has a minor league hockey team, which is a good time to go and watch, and I hit up a few Avalanche games while I was living in Denver. I know this will sound like coming off as a bandwagoner now, but I’m a Pens fan. My favorite baseball team is the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Steelers are my favorite football team, so at a young age, I figured I might as well yell for the Penguins. I guess I lived in Pittsburgh in a former life. I started rooting for them in the Mario Lemiuex days, even if he did hit on my girlfriend at a celebrity golf tournament about five years ago. It’s good to see them get a prodigy in Crosby and go back to the Finals. I’m rooting for them, although I probably won’t watch a game.

-> I’m really pumped about the new album from Freddie Joachim have you ever followed anything from him?

Travis: I guess I’ve been sleeping on him. I have his promo “Tiger”, but I can’t recall listening to it. It’s so difficult to keep up with everything these days, even I need to read-up on what others are listening to and what they think is the “new” thing. I’ll have to check him out again.

->Their seems to be a lot of artists coming out who seem to be a little more positive in their raps and music such as Braille, Surreal, Kero One, Coice 37, Kev Brown and many more. Some people say that it shouldn’t be labeled hip hop. I completely disagree but how do you feel about it?

Travis: I think you can definitely be positive and still be considered hip hop. In fact, that’s what hip hop was originally based on, positivity, a way to escape the negativity of what was happening in the Bronx in the early 70’s. The artists you mentioned there, they are different, and there needs to be some kind of evolution, in both music and lyrics. But you also can’t stray to far from the tree, before it becomes something unrecognizable from the original source. So, yeah, I’m basically flip flopping myself on “when does it become something other than hip hop”? It’s hard to say. For a long time, I was against stuff like DJ Shadow, and even stuff like Kid Koala and the Deltron 3030 stuff. But, I’m able to accept the fact now that things can’t stay the same, just don’t lose the sight of what your original influence once was.

->I’m sure there is plenty more questions I could ask you, but I know you’re a busy man with the blog and all so I have one more question. Who will be your next president? I personally don’t like any of them but I think it will be John McCain. Who do you think?

Travis: It’s funny, a couple things I try to stay away from on WYDU is politics and religion. I actually have strong feelings on both issues, but I’ve learned to keep them to myself unless someone asks for my opinion, which you have, so I’ll give touch on it…briefly…hahaha. Anything, and I mean ANYTHING is better than that bozo we have in there now. The U.S. is in such a shitty place and it’s all because of Bush and his love for oil and power. That said, I hope to god it isn’t McCain. The country needs a change and while McCain isn’t Bush, I think he’d still keep us over in Iraq longer than needs be. I think this is a prime time for the Democrats to take advantage of the situation. I’m not saying they are the solution to all our problems, far from it, but I think Obama has the qualities to be something special. I think the U.S. government in general is on the verge of being in utter disarray, but I think Obama could right the wrong. Then again, I could be moving my ass to some tropical island and sell fruity drinks with little umbrellas to tourists before it’s all said and done.

As far as who I think will win? As long as the rest of the U.S. can out weigh the bible thumpers of the Southern states, I truly think Obama can pull off the win. If not, it’s going to be a long two years. Yeah, two years, because I just don’t see McCain making it through a full term as old as he is. Then let’s pray to god it’s not some wacked out Republican such as Huckabee or Romney that is his running mate.

->I couldn't agree with you more. Both Huckabee and Romney make me sick. The only reason why I think McCain will win is because he is endorsed by the former president. One can only hope he doesnt win, but then again its out of my hands. Thanks again for taking your time to do the interview; I look forward to seeing what WYDU holds for the future.

Bonus Question!

->I understand you are a fan of drinking beer. My favourite beer out here in Canada is a brew by the name of Sleeman. Have you ever tried it, if not which is your favorite beer out there in the states?

Travis: Nothing like a cold beer on a warm day, or cold day for that matter. I haven’t tried Sleeman, don’t think I’ve even seen it out here. Like hip hop, I like different kinds of beers in different situations. When I’m drinking some brews while working outside, sitting at a baseball game, playing volleyball or the such, I’ll usually drink what a lot of you north of the borders call piss beer, usually Coors Light. It’s just easy to toss down, since it’s basically water. I do like my Micro brews though and am always down to try a new brew whenever I have the chance and the money. For the longest time, my favorite beer was Fat Tire. It’s an amber ale that is tasty out of the tap. But the quality has seemed like it’s been slipping, either that I’ve drank so much of it that I’m just getting tired of it. I’ve long been a fan of Black Butte Porter, it’s a dark beer and I’m a fan of those. Lately though, I’ve discovered a beer called Hale’s Cream Ale that I’ve been loving. Problem with that though, is I can only find it in one place locally. So it’s been kind of a treat when I have it. Another great beer is Moose Drool, which is a brown ale, which is probably my favorite kind of beer. Good stuff, think I’ll got get a six pack now.

Cage began his career with the infamous record entitled Agent Orange. It had huge success and gave cage a cult following in the NY underground scene. He became well known and in 2004 signed with the ever popular record label Def Jux. He released Hells Winter in 2005 and was nominated for an MTVu video award the following year with his music video for "Shoot Frank". Cage has matured over the years and is progressively becoming more involved with establishing his career as an artist. This June he has decided to release his newest album entitled Depart From Me. Cage gets into the reasoning behind the name for the album in this interview from Hip Hop Official..

There is some people who have mixed reviews about this album. Some fans are still stuck on the fact that Cage has evolved into a more mature artist and are worried he is straying away from his original roots. I enjoyed his last album "Hells Winter" thoroughly and expect the same amount of intensity to carry over to his newest album "Depart From Me". I believe as an artist he is growing strong and deserves more credit for his creativity and expansion in this Hip Hop world we fans live in.

Talk about dedication. Not only did Crayz show his efforts were dedicated on his new album by giving us a banger but he also showed dedication with the track Family Crest. In case you didn't notice the whole track outlines Gangstarr's (Guru and Dj Premier) timeline from Step In The Arena all the way up to Full Clip. Its truley an amazing track with a strong message. The beat is something from out of this world and bumps hard when volume is on max. Do you know what DYWK means?

Mick Boogie did a real nice job remixing Adele. This particular track isn't even my favorite from the album but its the most "hip hop" for anyone who is interested. This girl has a got an amazing voice. I was watching the Grammys a few weeks back and that's when I became turned on by her sound. It was nice to see her win a Grammy aside from all of the other mainstream garbage that all sounds the same. Shes only 21 hense the number 1988 (my age) and I'm sure it was a night for her to remember. Bringing 88 back.

Radix consists of SEEK and Quite Nyce. Ive been following them for about a year now and a few weeks ago they blessed us with another mixtape. I cant quite understand why some groups decide to put out mixtape after mixtape when its clear they have what it takes to release a full length album. Then again I am not an artist I am a writer and not even a very good one at that (haha). Anyways, this track is smooth. It puts you in that easy mind state we all love after a hard days work. Speaking of Grammys this man was ripped off. He was nominated for best R&B performance by a group or a duo and was beat out by John Legend. Who is John Legend? Ok, ok I know who he is and he did win the award with Al Green so I suppose Raphael had a long shot in order to win the award, but I still wish he did. This a great album for anyone who likes a little soul in their life.

I'm loving this track right here. The instrumental is very touching, Blue Sky Black Death never disappoints. Jean Grae has some very moving lyrics and this track brings images into my head that only I can witness. The album itself is a fantastic listening experience that I recommend every one out there give a spin.

This album is to me what cake is to a fat kid. In other words im loving it. Its so nice to hear experimental stuff every now and then. Im sure there is some people out their saying this isnt hip hop or near close to it. I personally think that this album is hip hop and all of the above. Which means it really doesn't have to fall in the category of Hip Hop. It can fall into many different genres/types of music. In my opinion its better for your music if your outlets are bigger than just the average hip hop head. All im saying is give it a chance and dont just turn your nose up at it. Its funny because everything I just wrote in this paragraph has to do with the track I posted. Take a listen and see for your self.

"Famous" came by my school last week and handed out pamphlets to raise awareness for his new EP entitled "IRAPNOW". He approached me and said "hey I'm a rapper come by the site and support some real hip hop" I replied "ha ha yea me too man" thinking that this man was nothing but a joke. I approached him after and handed him a link for "Brewrhymeswithcrew" and told him to stop by so I could set up an interview. I guess my blog wasn't good enough because so far he is a no show. Anyway, I went by his site and sure enough this man has lots of potential and is working his way up to stardom.

Exile is a talented producer who has overtime learned to play numerous instruments. His talent has shined all over the hip hop scene but was first witnessed when he did an album with Aloe Blacc. Travis from WYDU has mentioned in his previous posts that he was a fan of exile before Blu's "Below the heavens" hype started. Without sounding like a copy cat, the same goes for me. When I first started finding outlets to the underground scene one of the first of many albums I was able to get my hands on was Emanon (aloe blacc + exile) "The Waiting Room". That album had plenty of rotation in my Sony disc man back in 05'. As much as I like Aloe Blacc as a Lyricist I'm pretty sure it was Exiles production that reeled me in. Long story short, Ive been a fan of Exile ever since and I'm happy to announce that hes got another one coming. Exactly one week from today Exile will release to my knowledge his 2nd solo effort entitled "Radio". I don't have a track list for this one yet so I'm not sure if they're will be any guest features. What I do know however is that Exile created this album entirely from sampling Los Angeles AM/FM airwaves. Isn't that crazy? Exile has been known to be creative before but damn, now hes reached the pinnacle. I cant wait to hear it and I recommend everyone who is a true head out there check this one out when it releases.

A dog spelled backwards. In my opinion Rasco is indeed hands down one of the best to come out of Cali. Personally I think Rasco has a simple flow, yet he is still one of those lyricists that will make you click that rewind button. Rasco smashes beats and leaves tracks with a triumphant feeling. His debut album "Time waits for no man" which was released in 1998 by Stones Throw is a classic. Since then hes teamed up with Planet Asia in which the two of them then formed the hip hop duo known as "Cali Agents". Thankfully Rasco has got a new album coming soon. Originally to be released in the summer of 08' its looks as though now it is being pushed back to be released sometime in the new year (2009). His guest features will include a few favorites of mine including Supastition, Royce Da 5'9 and his longtime friend Planet Asia. Also look forward to some production from the infamous Mad Skills. As much as this release will be a global threat for hip hop listeners its also a threat for hip hop cats who have releases coming out in 09 as well, talk about competition. Look out for this one, its sure to be a banger.

Bavaria Premium Lager. Bavaria is brewed in Holland. Its an import over here in Canada and gets rave reviews for its great prices. What you see in the picture above (actual pic) is what I was sipping on last night and most other Fridays as well. A six pack of tall cans 500ml each, runs me 11 dollars which isn't half bad when you think about it. 6 tall cans at 500 ml each is roughly 9 bottles of beer. So when you do the math its an import beer that is pretty much a "dollar a beer" deal. Its 5 % alc and does the trick if you know what I mean.
This is only the pre-game warm up however, its a completely different story when I reach the bar. So if Bavaria is around the way at your corner store or liquor store pick up a case, you wont regret it.

Guru 8.0 Lost and Found will be ready for release in March of 2009.

Guru and DJ Solar declared they have decided to join forces once again to release a new album. The new album will be entitled Guru 8.0 Lost and Found. The last time these two teamed up they released a Jazzmatazz Mixtape "Back to the future". This album however Guru has assured his fans that it will not be a "Jazzmatazz" release.

“This is not Hip Hop jazz, this is straight Hip Hop,” Guru explained. “So, lyrically you're going to have that straight Hip Hop element.”

A lot of heads have mixed reviews about Guru straying away from the infamous DJ Premier, but in my opinion its nice to hear a change every now and then. When asked about the album this is what Guru had to say..

“The concept of real Hip Hop had gotten lost. But now it is found again on this record.”

As usual Guru expresses his passion and love for the art which is why no matter what producer hes with, you gotta love him.

Apple Earbuds

The famous Ipod Earbuds. In case you don't know these are the headphones that a purchased Ipod generally comes with. If you haven't purchased an Ipod and haven't had the chance to experience these headphones let me explain why they make me "mad as hell"...

Recently my Earbuds speakers blew. Like most "true heads" I have back up headphones but thought to myself that replacing the Earbuds would be easy and cheap so why not. I made a trip to the local Best Buy only to be surprised at the how costly the headphones actually were. I thought that a pair would cost me maybe ten bones, 15 dollars max. So when I realized that a set of these "Earbuds" were actually selling for 30 dollars I flipped my lid. I was already surounded by a bunch of best buy employees so I asked them what the deal was...

So one employee who looks like this guy tries to tell me that "oh its because they are apple headphones thats why they are so expensive." Like I didn't know this already, give me a break. My response was "no my friend, its because they are a rip off is why they are expensive!"
True story.

Mad as hell Mondays! I'm really looking forward to this one. Theres a lot for me to rant and rave about and it looks like Mondays are going to be the day to do it. Tick Tock Tuesdays. One of the things I like about hip hop most is that theres always something fresh and new coming out. Whether its monthly,weekly or daily its always there for a hip hop head to grab. I always feel like I am waiting for that new or upcoming album from this artist or that producer. Its always nice to know when such albums are coming out or how long I will have to wait before they are being released. Wait no more, the clock is ticking....

This is kind of old news. A few weeks back I was able to catch Atmosphere perform live at the Opera House in Toronto. I have been a huge fan of Atmosphere since God Loves Ugly but for some reason was never able to catch them live. The night started off with me and two of my close friends taking a drive up to Toronto. When we reached our destination we found parking and quickly jumped in line. The line up was pretty big, but it didn't phase us. A few minutes later Slug came out and greeted the fans. He explained that he was going to be doing something called "Atmosphere karaoke" where the fans would have a chance to get up on stage and perform their favorite atmosphere tune. I was a little out of it thanks to the mickey of Captain Morgan I finished on the drive up but I gave him props and told him how much I enjoyed his new album. The show opened up with Abstract Rude and then to everyones surprise Brother Ali Stepped out and did a set. The crowd went wild for Brother Ali as did I, but Atmosphere without a doubt was the most anticipated.

I'm not sure how many people know about this one. If you dont know, yes its true Slug & Murs did collaborate for 2 albums. The first album they released together was entitled "A Tribute To Christina Ricci" which was entirely produced by Grouch of the Living Legends crew. The second release was named after another well known actress (A Tribute To)Lisa Bonnet and was produced solely by the one and only Ant of Atmosphere. I chose to bring this album to the table over Christina Ricci's tribute for three reasons.

Everyone knows the time line for hip hop goes quite a ways back. In the 80's however in my opinion is when artists really started setting the bar. Eric B and Rakim were a duo who really shot up in the charts throughout the mid eighties. Rakim is still one of my favorite emcees because to this day I cant really see any one being able to match his flow. I purchased this album a few years back and you best believe it is still in mint condition. The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and they did a great job releasing the best hits from Eric B and Rakim on the "Millennium Edition".

This was an era when East Coast was the best of the best, hands down. Sure the West Coast blew up eventually but for me New York was where hip hop was at. Be sure to peep the running man in this live performance from Lakim Shabazz for Pure Righteousness.

Sometimes my mind gets caught up on to many things and I forget about the things that are most important to me. This blog is one of those things that I feel I neglect or sometimes do not take as serious as I should. Don't get me wrong, there are times where I just feel like shutting it down. I say this because the past couple of weeks have been tough over here (Site being hacked by a fellow blogger who I wont name, the hardest post with the most effort I ever put forth being deleted by that hacker,"stans" using my name on different blogs creating problems and visitors stopping by the site telling me my time is due and its time to move on like they were my dad and shit) so its kind of a no brainer why I would feel this way. This album somehow slipped by me in 2007. Razahs Ladder is filled with bangers and features a ton of underground emcees. Audiobiography includes Shabazz The Deciple who along with Hell Razah are present members of the Wu-Tang affiliated group Sunz of Man. Blue Sky Black Death produced the entire album so be sure to peep this one.

I searched high and low on the net trying to find any little piece of information I could on Bonobe but came up empty handed. Ghost a well known DJ and producer from the U.K did the remix for this track and its brilliant. This track in my opinion almost has a Radio Head vibe to it, which is fine with me because I adore Radio Head. The album from Ghost entitled "My Soul Looks Like This" came out this past April and ever since its been on heavy rotation on my I-pod. Check the track and go from there.

3. The Waitress - Atmosphere

Long and anticipated. Thats what I have to say about the months I waited before someone leaked the new Atmosphere album . I have been a fan of Atmosphere for quite sometime, going back to when I really started understanding real lyricism. The Waitress is one of the tracks that really grabbed my attention on the new album "When Life Gives You Lemons..." because Slug has always been a great story teller. Some people call it "emo" but I call it spitting the blues. Don't let the critics get to you, this album is worth every penny.

Young God and Kingston released their first full length instrumental album this past April and ever since it has seen nothing but fantastic reviews. This was my favorite beat from "Late Night Cinema". This particular instrumental starts off deep and questionable but soon comes into play and grabs you by the ear drums. With a few samples that sound eerily familiar this surely is a masterpiece of a beat.

5. Ayatollah - Louder

The month of April definitely saw some wicked albums from some great producers. Ayatollah was one of them. Ayatollah brings creative beats at a time where most producers in the game are making money off copying each other. Its nice to hear beats that remind me of classic New York times when hip hop was still hip hop. Louder is one of the beats that took me back to that era.

6. Buckshot & 9th Wonder - No Future

The formula is another album from Buck and 9th which was also released last April. This release left me feeling good but not great. After a few songs into the album it seemed to become a little repetitive and somewhat predictable. The production saw a high influence of soul which means 9th must've really flipped a lot of samples, so he gets my props for this. As for Buckshot his flow is still exceptional and his lyrics still bring a strong message . Make sure you check out "No Future" from Buck and 9th's new album "The Formula".

There is no doubt in my mind that Blu is going to make it big time within the next couple of years. As a young emcee he shows maturity when it comes to other emcees his age trying to make it in the hip hop game. Exile keeps the beats appropriate with a sound that you don't hear to much now a days in hip hop. With tracks like "Maintain" there is a pretty good chance you will be hooked on Blu and Exile so make sure you hear this one.

I was pretty hyped about "The Upstarts" on my last post and I still am. I'm not sure how many people gave this album a chance but if you haven't I highly recommend it. With featured artists such as Grap Luva and Kev Brown plus production by Freddie Joachim "The Know How" from The Upstarts does not disappoint.

Muneshine's latest album "Status Symbol" is definitely one that will make my top albums of 08' list. His production skills shine on almost every track and his flow is immaculate. This particular track was one that almost broke my neck. The beat for "Please Believe" matched Mune's emotional lyrics to a T. This album is a must have so make sure you check Muneshines new album "Status Symbol".

10. Mumbles - Here You Are

The first instrument I ever played was an acoustic guitar. I still own a samick and pick it up every now and then. Tracy McMillan a down-tempo singer pours out her soul on "Here You Are," and Mumbles matches it perfect with a simple acoustic-guitar sample similar to RJD2's "Ghostwriter." It's been a favourite of mine these past couple of weeks and I have a feeling most of you will enjoy it to.

As most of you know I reside in Canada. Canada is known for its cold days and its colder days. Dont get me wrong, I love living here. I have one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world no more than a 20 minute drive away (Niagara Falls), and im not far from the U.S border. But its rare we see a warm day before the month of May. However, this past Tuesday was quite warm. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and school was a write off. So I decided to join a few buddies of mine for some beers and a skate session. Its been a while since my feet touched a board, but i was really into it. It got me thinking back to the days where I worshiped every skater and how much I enjoyed playing Tony Hawks Pro Skater for playstation.

As far as music goes the soundtracks for Tony Hawks Pro Skater have always been highly influenced by hip hop. At the time I was only a youngin' but little did I know that one day some of these artists would make a huge impact in my life. For instance Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 had featured artists such as Krs One, Del The Funky, X-Zibit, Redman, The Nextmen and even House Of Pain. I mean its no wonder I loved playing this game so much.

One of the first decks I ever owned was a World Industries. It had Royal trucks, Birdhouse wheels and Birdhouse bearings (fastest pair of wheels I ever owned). Willy Santos has been tearing it up for as long as I can remember and it really shows in this video.

The Upstarts - Got What It Takes

The Upstarts are a hip hop group out of San Diego California. The Upstarts Consist of “Profile” of Sound Providers, “Price” (emcee) and “Iron Mike” (DJ/Drummer). Their music is very energetic and the album is a great listen. A stand out track for me is Grand Design featuring Grap Luva and Kev Brown. Freddie Joachim also shines on this track with the production keeping it jazzy.

Its always nice when you find out about a new and up n' coming producer. I first came across Freddie Joachim almost a year ago when I first listened to Son of Ran's - A Tribute To Sky City. Silent Knight's Restoration was an album I anticipated ever since I listened to his last album "Hunger Strike". In 2007 Silent Knight signed to Rawkus 50 which in my opinion made this album that much better. Reach is the track Ive selected to present as a favorite which features Emilio Rojas who is better known as Raks one. The track touches base on both artists perspective and what they are trying to gain from the hip hop industry. The beat is a remix by M-Phazes and includes a nice soulful sample for everyone to enjoy. If you haven't checked out "Restoration" from Silent Knight I fully recommend it.

Gnotes is an emcee who I came across over at WYDU a couple months back. He is a teacher of revolutionary ideas and revolutionary music. Tower of Babylon is one of the tracks off his album "Beats and Rhymes" I found interesting. After taking one listen it left me saying damn, why didn't I have any teachers like notes' throughout high school? Tower of Babylon emphasizes that instead of thinking only of yourself all the time it is important to remember we are all one. One problem with the music industry today is too many artists are high on themselves and only speak about expensive items while poor people starve which in turn leaves the listener thinking this is perfectly normal.
People of all ages, make sure you check out Gnotes - Beats and Rhymes for a great listen and overall a better way of living.

Some days are tougher than others and lets face it, sometimes you want to throw the towel in. Four Days In Geneva is filled with bangers but "Worlds Apart" is the track that grabbed my attention the most. Easy tiger. 11th hour is not the best album Del has released but in my opinion a few to many critics need to relax. I have been a huge fan of Del's work ever since I was 14. Del introduced me to many different genres of music and not to mention the infamous Hieroglyphics crew. There is no way I could ever bash Del for releasing an album that he felt was right. Del plays music that feels good, not because it sells. He is the first one to say his music is far from perfect, and I respect him for that and so should a lot of other heads out there. That being said Last Hurrah was a track that brought me back to the older Del and introduced me to the new and improved Del all at the same time. It features K.U. on both the lyrics and the production. Open your mind and check out some new Del.

As of today its been approximately two weeks since Astonish dropped "From Now Until Forever". So my question is why has this not been posted on the the big boy blogs out there that support real hip hop? I Know there is some other heads saying the same thing and the only answer I have for you is perhaps they just forgot. When I first glimpsed Astonish over at WYDU I was going crazy for the next couple of weeks reminding myself that the day was coming soon when I would be able to grip the album. It was 2005, a year of no stress, 6 packs and sess. 17 years of age and interested in building a nice collection of music. I couldn't believe it when I saw a post early in 07' over at Eric's blog WTR that was titled Jazz Addixx Oxygen Refreshed. At first I thought to my self "Hey I have this album"! but then I took a closer look at the cover. Sure enough it was the same crew, same tracks but with slightly more refreshing beats. Hence the addition to the title "Refreshed". It wasnt until yesterday that this album showed up. My parents are constantly finding albums of mine around the house, its pretty cool. Its like I hide the gems and my parents are my diggers. It re appeared and here I am now.

I remember after I grabbed the album, it had non stop play in my discman. Yea, imagine that, a discman. It was early 2005, what the hell was an I Pod? Anyways I can recall a high school field trip in February where I just plopped the headphones on and just blasted the shit out of this album all the way until Toronto. Nothing worse than sitting beside a buddy on a bus when all you want to do is cool out and listen to some easy lyrics and smooth jazz beats.Its kind of funny when that happens though, you know they are asking you questions or telling you a story and all you give them back is a head nod until they get frustrated and start chatting to the guy behind them. What could I do, I was in a trance. Staring at architecture, graff pieces and tall buildings while listening to hip hop is a better mix than rum and coke or some hash oil and a dubie for that matter. I have always been a fan of calm jazz and at the time I hadn't heard a better mix of jazz and hip hop. Excluding Jazz "We've Got" from ATCQ of course. But this was just something different. The elements were just on point. The sample from Pete and Cl "My whole mind state gravitates a weapon" on "Mindstate" with DJ Ragz On the cut was just a stand out track for me. It was perfect. Continuous replay with the track on repeat until I mastered the lyrics and the melody. Also "Unborn" was just another track that had me stuck. The soulful hum of the beat and the intense passion of the lyrics expressed were a great sequence. Cant forget the track "stress" ,with the perfect horn and drum pattern how could it be any better? Again the lyrics speak for the track. Anyone who is having a hard time with life needs to peep this one for some guidance. I know I did. The intro,intermission and interludes keep the listener going with exciting beats making the listener anticipating for the next track. Even the outro brings the listener one more track. Brilliance.

As you all know I'm Canadian, which is why when cats like this come from my homeland and a city so close to mine it puts a big fat grin on my face. I mean honestly, there has been so many great artists that have approached the microphone and have gave it a blessing almost 99.9% of the time but have been refused by labels across the border. Its disgusting.I would rant and rave about this concept all day but I believe I will save it for another post. Maybe it could go a little something like this "Why it sucks being a Canadian in the hip hop game" ;). Ever since I saw Travis' helpful post on Cheap Summer Drinking http://wakeyourdaughterup.blogspot.com/search?q=guide+to+summer+drinking Ive been inspired to do one of my own. So here goes nothing.

What up kings? I hope some readers are ready to "Get your girl in the mood quicker, make your jimmy thicker, St. Ides”!
Lets get down to business. Why would it not surprise me if every reader that has stopped by my blog has had a sip or taste of St.Ides? Shit, I was drinking the stuff when I was 14, back in those days that I now refer to as the "damn why I didn’t think of my future" days. My first experience with brew was in fact St.Ides. It was the beginning of my high school career around mid October. Some lady friends decided to form a function of no more than 30 people to meet in a park near by the school and have an all out drinking fest. We followed the same trend as most people do when they are underage trying to get there hands on some brew. We stole it. Kidding. I guess I have to thank the girls I was chasing because they were able to hook us up! Thank god for those older dudes who stuck by their motto when they said age is only a number. Ha-ha. From then on it was nothing but $5 40 ounce weekends.

Little harsh I suppose, but she still loves me. Surprisingly me and my friends got ridiculed one night for drinking St.Ides. We were at a party and when we showed up all we saw was older kids, older kids with O.E's and backpacks full with paint markers and spray cans. Typical Heads. Snap! I don't know what the big deal was but I’m assuming it was because they all recently watched the movie menace to society. From then on it was Olde English. St. Ides was second on the list. But coincidently this brew introduced me into freestyle sessions. Out at the house parties or known drinking spots for under age kids is where I first witnessed a live beat box and freestyle. Ciphers and battles. I was only in grade 9 at the time so all I could do was stand back and listen. It was nice to realize the difference between a wack rap and a dope verse. Watching these dudes flow, some whom I’m still friends with today, helped me understand a lot of important elements. It was also exciting being able to watch these guys tag or paint almost anything in sight. Then of course there was that one time where I vomited all over my city because I thought a slice of pizza all day would tide me over before drinking a bottle. I’m sure now a days I could wake up and pound one on an empty stomach, but when your young, skinny and stupid your chances of staying on your feet are limited. Oh well, live and learn right?

So it turns out the beverage made me think when it came to chilling with friends, meeting new people, getting in or out of trouble and most important HIP HOP. By the way I haven't had a 40 of malt liquor in a very,very long time.

The leader of that country needs to be impeached. Today. What is happening over in Iraq is wrong! Innocent men,women, children and baby's are dying. Not to mention all of the innocent lives of troops that have been taken for a purpose that involves nothing but a natural resource. Of course the resource is worth money , otherwise there would be no point in fighting right George? Wrong. Racism, religion and politics also play a huge role in the shiesty events taking place across seas. You could say "Well how about those weapons of mass destruction found over in Iraq"? Here is my answer "Bullshit"! Why did I choose that response? Because they never found shit! Again the facts back me up on that one to , so please no rebuttal. The ending scene of innocent civilians bloodied up and crying in this documentary almost made me bust a tear. It didn't happen. Only because I remembered there is still a chance for change. It is not over yet. Only the truth can set us free. Thankfully its all here in this video. The controlled demolition, the facts that state the U.S. Govt trained fellow Alqueada who attacked the United States and of course the wrongful doing of the cleanup after the events of 9/11 that also lead to harmful deaths.

I could loose a lot of respect for my blog with this post, but I stand strong in my position of being anti- Bush along with his affiliates and feel strongly that the truth needs to be exposed.

Prince Paul was asked to make this instrumental album with no budget and limited resources. All Paul had was a pile of useless tracks from the 80's to the new millennium to create this wicked piece of art. He went through with his mission and produced some really dope beats. He even attempted to use all live instruments on "Live @ 5" which actually turned out sounding pretty ill. I feel as though Prince Po has been over looked by the Pete Rock,Large Pro and Jay Dee fans because you never see his name pop up on top producers / beat makers of all time or even mentioned on most blogs out there. So Ive decided to grab this album off the shelf and give it a chance to be heard on the blog scene for the true heads. The album consists of great piano keys, dope drum patterns and a few guitar riffs. Prince Paul said this album was more than instrumentals and that it was more like skitstrumentals because of the funky samples of funny comedians and movie snippets that seem to occur throughout the entire album. From 88' to now Prince Paul brings together an unheard collection of beats, skits and tracks to cure all the dumb toys lacking out in the rapping industry. My favourite tunes from this album would be "It's A Stick Up" "Flattery" "My Friend The Popmaster" "El Ka Bong" "Yes, I Do Love Them Ho's!" and last but not least "The Night My Girlfriend Left Me". And If your having girl troubles make sure you check out "Flattery". Pure genius!

Yo I love Hip Hop! It speaks to me, it nourishes my soul, it keeps me moving and thanks to the right samples it is always introducing me to different genres of music. Do you feel the same way? Do you watch B.E.T or do you boycott the artists they support and switch the channel right away? Does all of your favorite rappers, emcees and lyricists rap about topics that relate to you and your lifestyle? Do you enjoy the sound of a piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, drum, a kick and a snare a scratch from a vinyl or even a female vocalist for that matter? Do you think of hip hop as an art form or is it just something you enjoy because your friends seem to like it? Do you believe Kool Herc is just another name for Hercules or one of the illest hip hop DJ/party thrower the Bronx ever experienced? Is hip hop something you think you will grow out of and never look back on or will you remember that hip hop was there for you, helped you keep cool, inspired you to understand why the world moves on it's axis and why it made you smile every time you heard a new track from your favourtie artist? Did you start out by listening to Souls Of Mischief or did your hip hop experience begin when 50 cent formed G-unot? Did you ever walk 5km to the cd store to support an artist, or did you see a music video for a track you liked and said "Shit..better turn on limewire and download that track, that shit was ill." Did you only bump mix tapes growing up or was it understood that to understand an artists point of view in his raps you needed to listen to the full album!? Is hip hop a hobby, a pass time or just another way to break the silence? Is spray paint only for construction or can it also be used for expression? Is style wars a documentary or something that Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie have every time before they get there slut movement on?

So with all of these questions above and with the correct answers whos to say hip hop is dead? If it still runs through your body like water in a boxer it is in fact still alive and well. Perhaps hip hop is dead but does that mean you should just forget about where it originated and why? Jesus Christ him self resurrected and one day so will hip hop.

Whats crackin? Yea, your right it has been a while since my last post. It is sort of chaotic around here lately. School is kicking my ass, work has been kicking my ass but the brew and weekends have been great to me.

Joell Ortiz. What can I say about this guy? Plenty.
This dude can eat emcees for lunch, dinner and breakfast.
He has seen the struggle, grew up in new york and reps hip hop to the fullest. Ortiz may come off in his lyrics as a "hard" intellectual but really deep down the man is actually very humble. He grew up with a single mom addicted to cocaine. To keep a close eye on his moms' he stayed home refusing school scholarships for basketball not to mention pulling off a score close to 1400 on his SAT’s. Oddly enough the grind his mom was going through Joell began getting involved in to support himself. Slanging on corners making loot and using his pay off to help get his music grind on. Guess what? It worked. He began making madd mixtapes walking into clubs with crates full and tossing them around the club. Eventually one of those tapes landed in the hands of Dr. Dre. Aftermath signed him and Ortiz has been doing big things ever since. Colabbing with some artists from both main and underground streams. Not that I am a fan of his track with Akon but he deffiently came correct with a favourtie mc of mine Imortal Technique. This album is for both fans of mainstream and underground scenes. Its a blend that will leave the underground heads saying "Damn this dude can rip it..but some of his tracks need some better production and does he really have to collab with Akon?" And the mainstream cats saying "are you serious did he just say -Yo do me a favor (what?)
Accidentally step on your white sunglasses...we don't wear those over here..this is Hip Hop"? His fanbase has recently said he is the next Big Pun, that him and Pun share the same energy, the same flow and the same knowledge. Because of this he actually did a dedication track to Pun. This piece of art shows that in fact nice guys do not always finish last and karma is not always a bitch or a son of one.

DJ Shadows Preemptive strike is beautiful trip hop and a mix of acid jazz. This is for purists. This is for travelers on the journey of Dj Shadow, because it takes study and an open mind to appreciate this record. It is a digression back to the old school, but this is Dj Shadow's classroom. It radiates with the layered, entrancing, subtle, and spiritual style that only he brings to the vinyl. Josh Davis(Shadow) is an artist who has stayed fresh from then until now, but this album is like a timeless interlude, a trailmark and a tribute. `What Does Your Soul Look Like` pts 1-4 which actually appear on on the album in track positions 2,3,4,1 are hella creative and for me, the title says it all. Be aware, the true value of this record is something you really have to listen for.
If you like to freestyle these tracks will let your mind grasp dope concepts. I dont know why exactly but believe me it happens.

So ive been a fan of D.I.T.C for a long time now and in February I was blessed once again by this cd company who stops off at my college every now and then with "Live at tramps NY". I spent 10$ on this album and it was worth every dollar. Dedicated to the late Big L the D.I.T.C show love to the fans by giving a live performance and releasing the recording. The album stands out with the dope remix produced by Diamond D for "next level" and a couple mean freestyles from Diamond D and Show+Ag plus my favorite track from the team, Lord Finesses "Hip 2 da game". The crowd is pretty wild for D.I.T.C and makes you want to scream with them. So since we couldnt make the show lets support the pioneers of real Hip Hop.

Refreshing!Mission! Where did the name come from? The name mission came from Mission Hill in Boston where they all first originated from. Unfortionatley the group is now known as Crown City Rockers. Basically what happened was Mission UK a 60s rock group emailed crown city and told them to change their name because they had more money. Bullshit but whatever. Crown City is another place where they grew up so its still relevant i suppose. But anyways Mission (Crown City)is jazz influenced hip hop and sounds beautiful. The production is A+ and the lyrics are 10/10. Rhyming about all my favourite topics, brew, graff, b-boying and women. Also rhyming about hard times , problems with the girl, family,job or just life in general. I love it. No guns, hatred or ego trippin just feel good , laid back music.

This trio came out of nowhere with an absolute soundbomb of a single called "swing it" in '94 that blew the roof off. It was in the same vein as H.O.P.-"jump around", with the soul intention to get you amped. The ONLY bad point with this album is, that for some ridiculous reason, they've put a far inferior remix of it onto the album INSTEAD of the original. The scary part is even thats good!! Apart from that its a case of strap on your seat-belt and get ready for an explosive ride. The beats are all neck breakers, only being surpassed by the velocity+ferocity of the 3mc's rhymes. With the exception of 3 tracks "original" (an infectious reggae influenced joint which YTEE shines on), "we run things" (a lovely jazzy track produced by ali shaheed from A.T.C.Q.) and "remember we" (a smooth look back on their lives before they made it) the rest of the album is a b-boy's party album!! Packed with solid banging beats+ amazing lyrics from all 3mc's, you're in for a treat. MR.MAN spits highly intricate, intelligent yet witty+funny flows, LEE MAJORS(KAOS) brings that hard edged, no nonsense battle angle, while YTEE is the reggae / dj element of the group. The standouts are "pon de attack", "original", "get on down", "we run things","remember we", "just cant stand it", "clear my throat" and "swing it".

Damn! I heard this album at my buddys house this past weekend. We were sippin some brews and playing some videos games for ol time sake. A couple blunts were passed and we knew it was time for some beats. So I chose this album out of my buddys cd book. I couldnt believe my ears. And to hear Krs say on the album that he made it over one weekend blew my mind. I actually had the chance to see Krs live in Toronto in October and im sure he performed some of these tracks but I was probably just to bombed to remember. But what I really cant belive is that "Ova Here" (Famous Nelly diss) is actually on one of his albums. I always thought it was a track only found on mixtapes. A couple more tracks i was fond of were "My People", "I Remember" (With a sample of Aretha Franklin)and "Believe It". So for any real hip hop fan check it out and copp a download while you can.

Once again friends props to madlib ... as a jazzfan, I thank him for his enthusiasm... i'm just glad to see true hip hop heads still lobbying for the cause of the jazz experience!If there is some real jazz heads out there make sure you pick this one up. Its brilliant, the album itself is a dope remix to the blue note catologue for those who are unnaware and the beats are flat out impressive Tracks to highlight are "Distant Land" and "Slims Return". Madlib, the genius young producer (yes, I believe he’s earned the title of “genius” by now) behind so many diverse projects over the years, from Madvillainy to the Quasimoto albums to Yesterdays New Quintet to Jaylib to DJ Rels, has finally dropped his instrumental album. It’s on Stones Throw, which makes sense—through his prolific production work he’s practically come to define the Stones Throw sound by now—and the comparisons to J Dilla’s Donuts are inevitable. Both albums are longer works composed of 30-something shorter tracks, most averaging about one to two minutes in length, and both are largely instrumental, using any vocals—usually sampled and chopped—mainly as instruments. Both are on Stones Throw, and the two were frequent collaborators, notably on Champion Sound. Damn Madlib has a nicer touch than Tiger Woods does with a putter. Always up to par with other producers and recently was able to collab with the great one Talib Kweli on Liberation. Madlib 'The Beat Konducta Movie scenes vol 1-2 is a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. This makes the album quite unique and allows imagery to enter your mind and will let you escape reality. My favourite beat on this soundtrack is "Pyramids" but most of these instrumentals are hot potatoes. Enjoi. And remember dont forget to practice your free steez.

This a delicious treat for any beat junkie. Created on his deathbed, Dilla shows why he is revered as one of hip-hop's all-time greatest producers. Dilla was believed to be suffering from a kidney-related illness for some time, dating back to 2004. He was just getting into his groove and got some real industry-wide props and recognition...man please...a moment of silence and we will have Jay Dee tracks to remember in his memory. Brassmunk - Dark Sunrise

BrassMunk is a hip hop group formed in 1997 in Scarborough, Ontario. The group consists of musicians S-Roc, Clip, Agile and Reign.

Brassmunk released a number of independent singles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and released their first EP, Dark Sunrise, in 2002 on 54th/Virgin Music Canada. The following year, Dark Sunrise was rereleased worldwide on Battleaxe Records as an LP, and included their previous independent releases. "Dark Sunrise" was nominated for Best Rap Recording at the 2004 Juno Awards. Funny thing is my little cuzin used to tell me about his cousin(sroc) who was going to put out a rap album and that the group was called Brassmunk. Little did I know my cousin was actually telling the truth. One day I was watching Rap City on Much Music (Canadian Tv) and up popped a Brassmunk video by the name of El Dorado. El Dorado is a single off Dark Sunrise and is one of the illest on the album. Later they came out with the video for Big which also blew my mind. After calling my cousin a lier he later brought me this album sighned by the whole crew. Anyways now that im done droppin the knowledge check out some more Canadian hip hop and grab this album.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient

I'll go ahead and state the obvious: Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth never made a bad album. Period. They could probably come back from their 13 year hiatus and dropped another classic as far as I'm concerned. The thing that makes this album great is 1) Pete Rock's immaculate production and 2) C.L.'s flow. You can't say that any of their albums sound like someone elses. CL has a unique format and interesting wordplay that commands attention. Pete Rock is easily one of the top 5 producers in hip hop history and his ear for jazz samples is unmatched to this day. They blend their talents on this album and the songs bleed into each other perfectly. Did I mention how P.R. drops snippets between tracks? Forget about it. He drops just enough to make you crave and come back for more. If you're not instantly feeling this album, your heart isn't beating. I grabbed this ablum back when I was in grade 9 on boxing day christmas. Seriously the album doesnt even have a scratch on it and my word ive played it over 200 times. I'm sure there is going to be madd blogs out there with this one its just I wanted to make sure that heads still had a chance to copp it.

An album for all the jazz heads out there. This album is ridiculoid. From Pete Rocks Famous cuts on Nas' Memory Lane and ATCQ(A tribe called quests)Electric Relaxation too abundance of more jazz hits that the god himself sampled from. This album is tight and very hard to find. From what I hear it was only released in Japan and it is selling on amazon.ca for over $50 bones.
Pete Rock does not dissapoint with this one so grab your 40, spark a blunt, vibe to this and support the elements of real Hip Hop.

You might be wondering how I came across this album. Anyone who is a Canadian and loves hip hop as much as I do should know about the Rascalz history. Im not going to lie to you I never even knew this album existed. I came across this album at my college one day when a record company came in to sell some cd`s. When I grabbed the album the cash dude didnt even want to sell it to me he had no idea this album was even mixed in with the pile he brought. But I am a digger and I am also very particular on what hip hop sounds good to my ears. This cd is so righteous and is so rare that only a true head like myself could bring it to you live. Really Livin`is from 1993 and brings old school canadian hip hop to a brand new level. Check it ouuuut. As far as the image goes i couldnt find the album cover image anywhere so i just posted the crew at the top of the page.Enjoy!
